Phnom Penh, June 4, 2025 — H.E. Hem Vanndy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation, received Mr. Wee Tang Yee, Grab’s Regional Manager based in Singapore, to discuss Grab’s growing role in Cambodia’s digital economy and its potential to support the government's efforts to onboard informal economy actors.
Minister Vanndy commended Grab for its contributions to Cambodia’s economy since launching operations in 2017 and expressed support for the company’s ongoing expansion and acquisition plans.
He highlighted the government’s priority in developing the informal sector, stating, “We welcome platforms like Grab to be part of this ecosystem. With its platform, Grab could transform commerce in Cambodia, helping producers and merchants go online.”
Mr. Wee Tang noted that in less than two years, Grab has expanded from operating in 3 cities to 19 across Cambodia.
“Grab has brought not only technology but also financial inclusion,” Mr. Wee Tang said. “Many of our driver-partners didn’t have bank accounts before joining us. With the data we have, we are able to helped our driver-partners access financial services and offer various incentives for top performers.”
The Minister asked Grab to explore new services such as lab sample delivery, continue supporting drivers through fair fee structures, and consider offering affordable vehicle rentals and maintenance options to assist drivers.
He also encouraged the company to collaborate with MISTI to promote awareness and scale informal economy onboarding efforts, especially through its Grab app and Grab Acaemy.
