News and Events Friday, 28 March 2025

On March 27, 2025, the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation (MISTI) and the Japan-ASEAN Science, Technology and Innovation Platform (JASTIP) signed a continuation of their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aimed at implementing Cambodia’s Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) Roadmap 2030 and advancing the country's STI landscape.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by H.E. Hem Vanndy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation, and H.E. Atsushi Ueno, Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia.

H.E. Dr. Try Sophal, MISTI’s Director General of STI, stated, “This agreement signifies the commitment of both organizations to shared goals in STI.”

JASTIP has played a crucial role in providing expertise for implementing key actions under Cambodia’s STI Roadmap 2030. This includes improving the governance of the national innovation system and enhancing the skills of MISTI staff through dedicated training programs aimed at cultivating STI coordination abilities.

A significant focus of the collaboration has been on human capital development. Both institutions have jointly developed programs to build capacity in science, technology, and innovation through initiatives like the annual STI Day, science fairs, and competitions aimed at promoting young scientists.

These efforts have not only fostered a culture of innovation but have also expanded the international network and collaboration of STEM institutions, attracting senior visiting researchers and promoting the international mobility of STEM students.

Moreover, the collaboration has extended to strategic policy development and the creation of research and development promotion frameworks.

Notable projects include the Toyota Foundation project, which enhanced mutual learning in STI coordination among Japan, Cambodia, and Thailand. Additionally, JASTIP has supported MISTI in developing strategic policy documents, gathering associated data on STI, and connecting with relevant agencies through the JASTIP-Net.

The new MoU for 2025-2028 will include activities such as job shadowing, attachment programs, and talent grant programs.

Professor Ohgaki Hideaki from Kyoto University, representing JASTIP, said, “I am confident that this MoU will serve as a solid foundation for a fruitful and enduring relationship and I anticipate many successes as we work together to achieve our shared objectives.”
