Phnom Penh, February 13, 2025 – The National Assembly’s Committee 9, led by H.E. Nin Saphon, visited the National Institute of Science, Technology and Innovation (NISTI) and the Science, Technology and Innovation National Laboratory (STINL) to gain insights into their mandates, achievements, challenges and future directions.
During the visit, Minister Hem Vanndy briefed the committee on key reforms at both institutions. He noted STINL's transformation into a public administration institution and highlighted NISTI’s focus on applied research that bolsters local industries. The Minister cited a collaborative project with Korea, aimed at establishing a food center designed to enhance product quality and assist SMEs in meeting export market requirements.
NISTI is currently leading several initiatives, including food irradiation in partnership with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Young Scientists Program (YSP) to inspire future scientists, and various research and training services for the private sector.
Since its transformation, STINL has expanded its testing capabilities, adding 40 new parameters focused on key export sectors such as rice and cashew nuts. With ISO/IEC:17025 certification and international accreditation from SAC-SINGLAS (Singapore) and NATA (Australia), STINL tested 11,018 samples in 2024, with results recognized internationally. The laboratory is also developing a Mechanical, Electrical, and Electronic Laboratory (MEEL) and a Research Laboratory services to further boost Cambodia’s competitiveness in regional and global markets.
The delegation commended the achievements of both institutions and underscored the critical role of science, technology and innovation in driving economic development, supporting the government's Pentagonal Strategy and Vision 2050.
The Committee 9 delegation concluded the visit with a tour of the upgraded facilities at STINL, fostering a cordial exchange of ideas and reinforcing the collaborative spirit between the National Assembly and these vital institutions.
